Alexandra Park Neighbourhood Learning Centre (APNLC) offers a variety of free, learner-centred programs including Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) and Academic Upgrading (AU) classes, as well as one-to-one tutoring delivered with the support of volunteer literacy tutors. Our operating hours are flexible and fit into the schedules of most people.

APNLC offers classes in the daytime and the evening.

Literacy and Basic Skills 1 &2 Monday - Thursday: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Reading, writing, working with others, using computers, and numeracy (math).
Evening Literacy and Basic Skills Monday & Wednesday: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Reading, writing, working with others, and using computers.
Academic Upgrading Monday - Thursday: 10:00 am - 3:00 pm College/university preparation in reading, writing, math, and computer skills.

APNLC’s one-to-one tutoring program may be a good fit for people who:

want a little extra help with a certain subject;

have a busy schedule and can only come to the Centre for a few hours each week;

want to brush up on their skills before joining a class.

Here’s how it works: learners are matched with a volunteer tutor who has been trained to work with adults. Tutoring partners meet at the Centre for two hours every week. The learner decides what they are going to learn and how they are going to learn.

Some tutor-learner pairs study for the Drivers’ Test together. Other pairs write stories, poetry and read books. There are pairs who use our computers to practice sending e-mails and finding information on the internet. Some pairs focus on learning more about numbers and math. There are lots of options!

If you are interested in joining the program, please give us a call at the Centre.

Our number is 416-591-7384.

A staff person will ask you some questions to see if APNLC is a good fit for you. After we talk on the phone we will invite you to the Centre to talk more about your learning goals. We will also do an assessment that will help us decide which program you will start in.
