Classes & Workshops

APNLC offers a variety of classes at various times throughout the week:

  • Literacy & Basic Skills (LBS)
  • English as an Additional Language (ESL/EAL)
  • Digital literacy
  • Health & wellness
  • One-to-one tutoring
  • Food skills
  • Financial literacy
  • Indigenous literacy*

Which class or combination of classes would be right for you? Classes are taught by qualified instructors. We change the classes throughout the year. Please contact us for an intake and assessment.

*APNLC is in proud partnership with the Native Men’s Residence life skills program, Apaenmowineen. We provide literacy programming for Apaenmowineen participants on a weekly basis.

All program participants must be residents of Ontario, above the age of 18, and have a valid social insurance number (SIN).

Spring 2024 Program Schedule

Yoga

Thursdays 1:30-2:30pm

Drop-in yoga program for all levels. The program is free, and no registration is required. Mats and props provided.

Sow & Grow

Wednesdays 1:00 - 3:00 pm

Learners participate in workshops and get hands-on experience planning, planting, and maintaining a food garden. Reading, writing, document use, and math activities will be included.

Creative Writing

Tuesdays 6:00-8:00 pm

Workshops offered in partnership with Scadding Court Community Centre & Writers Collective of Canada.

English as an
Additional Language (EAL/ESL)

Mondays 1:00 - 2:45 pm

For intermediate English speakers at CLB levels 3 – 5. Students develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills with support from a TESOL-certified instructor.

Tech Talk Digital Literacy

Tuesdays 6:00 - 8:00 pm

A group for older adults who want to improve their digital literacy skills whether it’s on a laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Each workshop focuses on a different topic.

Reading & Writing

Learners improve reading and writing skills by reading books and news articles as well as practicing a variety of writing techniques.

One-to-one Tutoring

Monday - Friday various times

Learners are matched with a trained volunteer tutor and meet once a week to work on their learning goals.

Health Literacy

Wednesdays 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Participants develop reading, writing, and digital technology skills while learning about topics related to mental, physical, and emotional health.

Self-care & Wellbeing

Thursdays 1:00 - 2:30 pm

This group is for people who want to practice self-care strategies and learn how to manage stress. The instructor guides learners through a series of breathing, yoga, and arts-based self-care practices that helps to improve your mental and emotional health.

Community Kitchen

Thursdays 10:30 - 12:30 pm

This 8-week food skills program will develop the learners' reading and math skills while working in a group to prepare a meal. We will also learn about safe food handling, knife skills, and how to follow a recipe.

Nourish & Flourish Food Skills

Thursdays 1:30 am - 3:30 pm

This 8-week program is for learners who want to practice cooking skills, explore cultural food traditions, and discuss how food can fuel the body, mind, and spirit. Learners will prepare a healthy recipe each week.
