There are a few different ways you can become involved with the learning Centre: you can volunteer as a literacy tutor, come out to a community event or make a donation to support our programs.
Our volunteer tutors are matched with adult learners and meet one-to-one every week for 2 hours. We are currently seeking tutors who can work with learners on reading, writing, numeracy, and using digital technology. We welcome people from diverse backgrounds and experiences that reflect our multi-cultural community.
All tutoring sessions take place on-site at Scadding Court Community Centre or Sanderson Public Library. Volunteers are asked to complete a 15- hour volunteer tutor orientation and training before they start tutoring. They must also commit to meeting with the same learner for 2 hours per week for 6 months or longer.
APNLC accepts donations from individuals, groups and businesses. We offer charitable tax receipts to those who donate. Our Charitable Tax number is: 132001868RR0001. Donations are used to buy materials and books for our learning programs and to help fund experiential learning opportunities.
Funded through the Trillium Foundation, SharedTime is a collaborative project between Volunteer Toronto and the Centre for Digital Storytelling in Berkeley, California. SharedTime is a 3-year project to collect the stories of volunteers, beneficiaries of volunteers and nonprofits in Toronto with the aim to build the legacy of civic engagement in Toronto.
